Hike Summary: | This hike is a loop utilizing a combination of trails. Start on the Halema’uma’u Trail, descending 400 feet through a rain forest to the floor of Kilauea caldera. Pass the junction with the Byron Ledge Trail on your left at the .4 mile mark. Continue on the Halema’uma’u Trail across the caldera floor to Halema’uma’u Crater, a smaller crater within Kilauea’s huge caldera or crater, some 2.6 miles from the start. En route you will pass a second junction with the Byron Ledge Trail on your left. From the Halema’uma’u Crater, return to that junction and take a right onto the Byron Ledge Trail. After a little over a mile, this trail climbs a ledge above the floor but below the rim of the caldera. At 1.5 miles from the start of the Byron Ledge Trail, pass the junction with the Devastation Trail on your right. Continue along the Byron Ledge Trail passing two junctions on the right, both leading to trails around and into the Kilauea Iki crater. You can extend the hike here to include a portion or all of these trails or continue on the Byron Ledge trail to it’s junction with the Halem’’uma’u Trail. Return on this trail to the starting point at Volcano House Hotel. |
