Hike Summary: | To get to the island you need to take the ferry from the mainland or charter your own transportation. Once on the island there are several hikes that you can take. The most popular is that which takes you through the ruins of Dungeness. I had chosen to stay on the island for three nights so my hike started on parallel trail towards Stafford Campground. There are a total of 5 different campgrounds on this 19.5 mile long island. Four of the campgrounds are considered backcountry and one (Sea Camp) is developed. I chose to stay at Stafford which is considered backcounrty but the park service had just put in a new bathhouse for these sites. From Sea Camp dock to Stafford Campground is a little over three miles. Endless white sand beaches, ferel horses, and old mansions are the highlights of this park. Some choose to make a day trip out of this park, but I feel that to truely experience this island you should stay over night. Water is available on the island but it must be treated, filtered or boiled. There is also no trash cans on the island so anything you pack in must be packed out. |
