Hike Summary: | This strenous 13 mile loop starts out from Vogel State Park near Cleveland, GA. Most of it winds through the Blood Mountain Wilderness with about two or three miles comprised of an abandoned jeep trail. Part of the path follows the famous Duncan Ridge Trail. This is a nice trail with plenty of water sources. A side trail leads to the summit of Coosa Bald (4,400 ft.) There is a lot of elevation gain and loss - about 6,000 feet. This trail is easier when walked in a counterclockwise direction. I did this hike at the end of March. There were no leaves on the trees yet, so the view was fairly unobstructed across the ridges. Although the temperature was mild (high 40's at night and mid 60s during the day), the mosquitos had just come back to life for the year. They were especially bad up near the tops of the mountains on the leeward sides of the ridges. This trip could be done in one seven hour day if you don't have a pack on, but it would probably be more fun if you turned it into an overnight trip. There are a lot of nice, well-established campsites. |
