Hike Summary: | October 2007 we all visited the Blood Mountain cabins at Neels Gap to spend a weekend away from Florida. From the cabins there is a spur trail that leads almost right up to the huge outfittter store on hwy 129. We were a party of 7, me, my wife Cheryl, 3 kids, 2 of their friends - youngest age 8. We went south on the AT up to Blood Mountain. It was my first time there. It was a Saturday, the weather was beautiful and the trail was CROWDED with lots of dog hikers. The dogs were all friendly, I didn't step on anything left behind by them. Blood Mountain was beautiful although I was surprised to see about 40 or so people and a dozen or so dogs up there when we got there. We came back on the Freeman Trail at Bird Gap and saw far fewer folks. The Freeman Trail was a bit more challenging with alot of rock jumbles to cross. Our kids made it fine. I am not complaining about the trail being crowded. On the contrary it was encouraging to see alot of folks out on the trail, not sitting on their butts somewhere or wasting their time at the mall. There are alot of places to go when one wants to be by oneself in the woods. |

Lenny, thanks for sharing your experience. I am deeply disturbed by what happened to Meredith as well and found this page which helped me get a better feel for what Blood Mountain was like. It looks like a beautiful – although busy place. It’s amazing to me that she could be abducted on a major Holiday (New Years) with so many people and dogs around.
Blood is a beautiful mountain spoiled by the passing of meridith emmerson at the hands of an idiot, keep hiking!!!!!! I was there the day she was suppose to be murdered with my dog doing the back side trail on Friday to volunteer!!!
