Hike Summary: | This trail is located in Black Rock Mountain State Park in Mountain City, Georgia, just outside of Clayton. The distance is the total for a loop which makes a good day hike. This is Georgia's highest park in elevation at an elevation just over 3300 ft. The temperature was pleasant. A park ranger told me he had never seen a temperature over 90 degrees. The difficulty in this trail is in a series of uphill and downhill excursions. It starts at just over 3300 ft and ends at only 3100 ft. The last six tenths of the loop before reaching the parking lot is uphill. The trail itself is very narrow but well marked. In many places, the brush beside the trail overlapped the trail, so long pants are a good idea. The beginning of the trail passes through an area dotted by wild ferns. There is also an abundance of galax which gives off a skunk-like odor. There are two campsites on this trail. One is close to the beginning of the trail, and the other is at the loop-Lookoff Mountain. |
