Hike Summary: | This light nearly 10 mile loop right outside of DC is a great little morning jaunt that can be accomplished in only 2 1/2 hours if you want to. With virtually no elevation change, maybe 100 ft in only one section, you can really truck if you have plans and want to just get it done. You start in at the Roosevelt Island parking lot, and head north out to the trail head. There is a sign posted with flyer maps and info. The trail follows the Potomac River up the Virginia side to Chain Bridge, crossing the Potomac and returning along the Canal Path before crossing the Key Bridge back to the parking lot. I am using this hike as a quick morning trainer for a 12 day trip on the Long Trail later this summer which will later turn into a round trip on only the PHT 10 mi. out and back. There are very few people on the Virginia side of the Potomac along the Heritage trail but significantly more along the Canal Path. |
