Hike Summary: | #24 in John W. Robinson's "Trails of the Angeles" 140'Elevation Gain/Loss Excellent moderate distance hike to Echo Mountain. The Sam Merril trail is well maintained and easy to follow. The 2.5 miles to Echo Mountain would be a great evening walk, with a nice sunset vista at the top. From the entry to The Cobb estate at Lake Ave @ Loma Alta drive, Cross Los Flores Canyon. Pick up the trail here and switchback up the canyon wall about 2.5 miles. At the top you reach a junction just North of Echo Mountain site. Turn right and walk 100 yards to the ruins of the Echo Mountain Hotel. There is a picnic aea to your left on the remains of it's tenneis courrts. You can explore the area . Among the ruins are historical signs, and plaques describing the once grand hotel and railway that occupied this location. There are remnants of the railway placed for you you to view. The foundation of the hotel, as well as the remains of it's reservoir, are also present. You can sit and watch the sunset, have a picnic, expore more of the historic railway(see other posts), or return the way you came. |
