Hike Summary: |
Take this hike mid-week in the springtime to avoid crowds and see the forest at its best. The trail is a semi-loop; find the trailhead at the back of the parking lot, and stay right when the trail forks in a mile or so, to begin the loop counterclockwise. The trail begins as a well-maintained singletrack winding above a beautiful creek through a redwood rainforest. Later you'll emerge onto sage- and wildflower-covered coastal hillsides with views north and south. The views can range from miles of sparkling Big Sur coast, to all-encompassing blankets of Big Sur fog, depending on your luck. The trail has a couple of steep sections, and the elevation gain is about 1600 feet. Once you're back at the trailhead, walk through the tunnel to the west side of the highway for a short, flat walk to view McWay Falls, a unique and picture-perfect Big Sur setting. |
