Hike Summary: | From the Angeles Crest Highway at Islip Saddle, the hike begins on the Pacific Crest Trail ascending through a forest of pine trees for 2.5 miles to the Little Jimmy Campground. Here you can either go straight up the Pacific Crest another half mile and pick up the trail to Mt. Islip on the right, or go through Llittle Jimmy Campground to catch a small connector trail to the Mt. Islip trail. I chose the latter going up, but bypassed the the connector trail coming back down. From Little Jimmy campground it is about 1 mile of switchbacking to the peak of Mt. Islip. Along the way there are excellent long vistas of the surrounding mountains and views of the Mojave desert to the north. Note: I rate the trail as moderate to difficult, but if you are not used to the elevation (the trail begins at over 5000 ft. and gains 1500 feet) you might have to take it slower than usual and with more frequent rests. |
