Hike Summary: | From the trailhead, the trail begins to climb immediately, but it only goes up about 200' before nearly leveling out. At this point the trail passes through a ponderosa pine and aspen forest. About 1 mile up the trail the hiker is afforded the first view of the Transept, a deep ravine of the Grand Canyon. For the next several miles, the trail follows closely to rim of the canyon with numerous views. It also has 3 places where the trail turns away from the rim, descends into ravines and climbs the other side. None of these climbs are particularly challenging. The last couple of miles the trail passes through the remnants of an aspen forest burned over in the 2006 fire. While the aspens are regenerating nicely, they are still small, of course, so the forest is very open along this part, with only the more widely scattered ponderosa pines for shade. As the trail crosses to the west side of Widforss Point it passes through a fairly thick forest of mostly ponderosa pine and drops down a short way to the end of the trail. Here the hiker finds a great view of the Buddha Temple, the Temple of Isis and Haunted Canyon, as well as extensive views to the west and south of the main canyon. |
