Hike Summary: | This is a very interesting hike running up Apache Canyon through an old mining area. It can be backtrack hiked, but its more fun to head South from the canyon head and drop off of the ridgeline back into the valley below, and it will also give you an opportunity to see several other mines and processing areas. The Gold Prince Mine is still active, and impossible to miss for parking purposes. About 2 miles from where you park, you will find the remains of a ranchhouse from the 1970's, built on the remains of a mine building from the late 1800's. Tailing piles and shafts line the raod on both sides. Simply follow the raod until you are finished walking and looking, and then head straight South until you reach the ridgeline. The views are quite spectacular, as you can see 90 miles from the ridge. Deer are common, and several of the mines are flooded, giving you a water supply if you've brought along a filter. |
