Directions: | From Walhalla, South Carolina, head west on Route 28 to Route 107. Once into North Carolina turn left onto Bull Pen Road. Go about 2 miles until you see National Park Sign (on the left) for Ellicott Rock Wilderness and the trail heads south from here. It is about a moderate 1-1/2 hour walk along the ridgeline and then down to the waterline of the Chattooga near the SC/NC border. Good campsites are available as soon as you reach the river. It is an easy walk along the river. A short day hike would end at the intersection of the trail with Burrells Ford Road. A recommended two day hike would have you hike south on the trail until the trail intersection that heads east to the Big Ben Road parking lot. Leave your backpacks here and walk along the Chattooga for about 30 minutes to come to Big Ben Falls (worth the excursion). |
