Hike Summary: | Located on the north shore of Lake Erie, Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve encompasses approximately 435 acres of open field, hardwood forest, woodland swamp, cattail marsh, barrier sand beach, and open water lake. There are approximately 4 miles of hiking trails, both paved and non-paved, as well as a few boardwalk overlooks. I typically use these trails and the adjacent beaches for early morning runs when visiting family in the area. However, on this particularly frigid day, I decided to bundle up, grab the camera and go for a walk. I was pleasantly surprised by the abundance of small wildlife, which I generally don’t notice when I’m on my runs. Interesting fact: One of the paved trails within the preserve was once the original vehicle entrance road to Cedar Point Amusement Park. However, after years of the lake washing away portions of the road along the north shore, an alternate entrance route was constructed further to the west. |
