Hike Summary: | La Jolla Valley Nature Preserve has a diverse terrain that makes for a pretty delightful hike, even though you are never far from the sights and sounds of civilization. La Jolla Canyon trail is the approach to the Vallley, and the wooded trail follows a stream for about 2.5 miles. At this point you can proceed straight up to the Overlook Fire Road and the Backbone Trail over to Sycamore Canyon (which I did not do this trip) or turn left to the La Jolla Valley loop trail. The La Jolla Valley is a small grassy steppe surrounded by peaks - Laguna Peak, La Jolla Peak, Mugu Peak and others. The Mugu Peak trail branches off from the La Jolla Valley trail and runs around the flank of Mugu Peak overlooking Highway 1 and the Pacific Ocean, with a side trail going to the top of Mugu Peak, itself. Mugu Peak is a good place to rest and have a snack - but it's windy. From other trail reviews I gather it is a good place to sight whales, though I only saw a vulture and a few red tail hawks (I think). The Mugu Peak trail rejoins the La Jolla Valley loop trail and the hike is completed by returning down the La Jolla Canyon trail.
