Hike Summary: | Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) is the only national park in the state of Ohio. It was created as the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area on December 27, 1974, and designated as a national park on October 11, 2000. It sits just a short distance from the highly urban areas of Cleveland and Akron, but encompasses nearly 33,000 acres, and offers over 125 miles of hiking trails. Trail maps are available at most visitor centers. Winter activities include hiking, cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snow tubing, snowshoeing, sledding, and ice fishing. The Winter Sports Center at Kendall Lake Shelter offers both snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, while the nearby Brandywine and Boston Mills Ski Resorts offer downhill skiing and snow-tubing. This particular hike consisted of a trek around the Plateau and Oak Hill Trails, both located in the southwest quadrant of the park. The trails, both of which are loop hikes, are 4.9 and 1.8 miles, respectively, for a total of 6.7 miles. The Oak Hill Trail is located within the Plateau Trail, and both are easy to moderate trails suitable for both snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. |
