Hike Summary: I did this up and back hike over 6 days in July 2006. The Beech Creek Trail was a beautiful approx. 7 mile section that joined up to the Deep Gap Trail. The Deep Gap Trail goes north to the AT at Deep Gap. From there you take the AT south to the Southern Chunky Gal Trailhead. The Chunky Gal goes about 22 miles to Tusquitee Bald and ends at the Fires Creek Rim Trail. This was a pretty challenging hike for me. On the Deep Gap Trail there is a killer section that left me gasping on the way up, clinging on to trees on the way back down. The Chunky Gal has its share of tough climbs, one notably from Bob Allison campground to Tusquitee Bald. The Chunky Gal was in reasonable condition. Beech Creek Trail was very scenic with some very nice waterfalls along the way. This was my second trip on the Chunky Gal. It was my first trip on the Beech Creek and Deep Gap trails. This area along Tallulah River road was very nice and I wouldn't mind coming back here again.

The Holden Cove Trail from the Tallulah River Road to the intersection with the AT and Chunky Gal Trail is open and clear as of 11/7/09. It is 3 miles in length and has great views and many waterfalls. Great option to access the Chunky Gal trail or the AT in this area.
