I see these posts are a little dated, but I just recently got a hammock and WOW it is great. If you like hiking in and spending a day or two at a fixed location, a hammock is the way to go. You get to sit off the ground during the day. You can lay down during the day without climbing into a sleeping bag (which in the South is no fun in the middle of the day). I had the most relaxing trip I have ever had and it was largly because of my new hammock. I got the Eagle’s Nest Outfitters hammock and hanging system which came in around $80.

I’m new into hiking, but have discovered a great great item. The camping Hammock. It weighs less than two pounds and its a dream. My favorite hiking experiences involve hiking in and finding a river or creek site to chill at with the 2 mutts for a day or two. Setting up the hammock and having a place to lay and read or sleep is unbeatable.

Birdshooter, whats your take on hammocks?

Big Sur California. A place where it NEVER rains. It was my first hike EVER. My ex-wife was asthmatic, but my friend INSISTED we could make this hike. less than 20 minutes in to a 9 mile hike she had an attack. We let the group go on ahead because we were slowwing them down. It rained for the next 48 hours. Our gear was nothing but rental stuff, so it wasn’t any top brand waterproof stuff. The next day when we finally made it out, the other car of hikers was gone from the trail head. They had made it back earlier, re-fueled, contacted the rangers, and headed back out to look for us. Its funny now to look back on, but it wasn’t funny at all at the moment. ALWAYS BE READY FOR RAIN!

The only hiking companions I have are my two dogs. We usually stick to slower, less used trails, and try hikes during the weeks as often as we can to avoid the masses. Don’t worry, they are both self concious and usually do their business far from sight. The do get a little edgy in the woods at night, and have barked at the night hickers, but once they realize its just people, the tails are wagging again.
