Interesting perspectives on Into the Wild from the Oprah show including Krakauer, Sean Penn, McCandless’s parents/sister

The media blitz is on. Backpacker has a Q&A session with the actor playing McCandless in this month’s issue. Should be an interesting movie. I wonder how long it will take for all of the items McCandless left behind (and reportedly are still in the bus) to end up on EBay. That’s be a damn shame.

I can honestly say that in my 20+ years of hiking and backpacking, I have never really been “afraid” and felt like I needed protection (ie. a gun). I’ve been with people who have carried them on our overnight trips, but am generally more frightened that they might accidentally shot one of us than of anything I have ever encountered in the wilderness.

Saw a moose once in New Hampshire. It was rainy – had been pouring all day – and I wasn’t enjoying the trail that much. After seeing the moose, which was the first time I spotted one from the trail, my entire mood changed. I didn’t mind hiking in the rain anymore that day.

I agree. You should also check the section that takes you over Rabun Bald in Georgia. Views are outstanding in all directions.

Well my man, I spent two days slugging a 70lb pack seven miles in California and let me tell you I don’t intend to do it again. There is something to be said for going light. Ultralight – we’ll I guess that depends on what exactly is in your pack. But going light – I’m sold on that.

I have a Garmin and have pretty happy with it. My only beef is that it drains the batteries way too fast. I can’t run it for more than a few hours at a time. But it’s nice to take the guess work out of the backcountry experience.

Forgot to mention, you can also probably find a map in Highlands at one of the stores there.

Saw the same article. Unbelieveable. Had no idea this was going on so close to Grand Canyon National Park.

Man Falls To Death At Waterfall

    POSTED: 9:38 am EDT April 30, 2007
    UPDATED: 3:48 pm EDT April 30, 2007

BREVARD, N.C. — A 21-year-old Georgia man has died after falling from a 50-foot waterfall in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, authorities said.

Thomas William Tidwell of Auburn, Ga., fell at Moore Cove Falls as he tried to cross a stream Sunday, Transylvania County Sheriff David Mahoney said Monday.

Tidwell had been hiking with his girlfriend when he fell. They were hiking in an area with no official trail, though hikers often make their own path to the top of the waterfall, officials said.

    Tidwell died at the scene.

“Everything points to just a tragic accident,” Mahoney said.

The county has more than 250 waterfalls, and local emergency workers respond to about a half dozen waterfall accidents a year.

Creative also has a 2G with FM Stereo, even voice recorder, and it takes a AAA battery which is nice for the trail. $70 with color backlight. Love mine.

It’s definitely out of print/stock. I’d check E-Bay or Amazon and try to pick one up used.

Ohhh, and you know I’m gonna answer this one…. Let’s see, I think it was seven days once when I did a section of the Long Trail in Vermont. I actually had to replace my sleeping bag after that hike – no kidding. It was 90 degrees all week and I’m a big man that sweats a lot – so I think you get the idea.

Went 12 days once while on the PCT not counting the occasional jump into an icy lake. I actually got to the point where it didn’t really bother me if you can believe that.
