My fiance and I are getting ready to go on a hike in Pisgah National Forest in NC. He has a lot more backpacking experience than I do. We just purchased two Garmin Rino HCSx GPS handhelds. I would definately reccomend them. They pick up a lot of satelites, even worked in a basement of a house so tree cover should not be a problem. All the Rino line of GPS have a system where they can locate each other, so we can know where each other is in case we get separated or have an emergency. It even gives road directions. They are really cool. I’ve only had them 3 days but I would definately recommend that you check them out.
