My wife, my daughter, and I will be in Bryson City from June 10-16. Aside from the obvious places to see in the Great Smokey Mountain National Park, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for good hikes around the area. My daughter is about 20 months old. We have a carrier for her, but she doesn’t really like sitting in it and she isn’t likely to hike far on her own, so short easy hikes are pretty much a necessity. Hikes to waterfalls would be a plus.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Head to Deep creek. There are nice gravel trails that follow a creek where visitors enjoy tubing. For a little more adventure, drive past deep creek and hike the “road to no where” trails toward Forney creek area– just walking through the tunnel is awesome–make sure you bring a flashlight!

If you don’t mind a drive, I would recommend the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness area. There is a 2 mile loop that winds around some large deciduous trees and a great place for kids. It is located in Robinsville is about 45 minutes from Bryson City.

The A.T. goes through Wesser. You could do a short hike to a shelter that’s about a mile south from the N.O.C. I guess it’s a little late to tell you this but if you are ever back in the area. It’d be a nice, moderate hike.

Cheoah Bald is AWESOME! It’s about 8 AT trail miles from Wesser.
