My two friends and I want to go backpacking this summer. I’ve been backpacking once at Philmont, a boy scout adventure base in New Mexico. We want to go to Colorado, but we aren’t sure exactly where to start looking. We want to go for about a week or so. If you can help me out with any suggestions that would be great.

Suggest you check out the Rocky Mt. National Park or Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. RMNP certainly has more trails and choices of places to hike but also has more people. Of course you can probably avoid most of the crowds by taking a longer backpacking hike. The gunnison NP is pretty unique from a geological standpoint – awesome canyon – though I’m not sure about the availability of longer backpacking hikes. The North Rim would probably be better for the longer hikes as well as being less crowded. Check out the websites for both parks for more info.

Another alternative might be Great Sand Dunes NP south of CO Springs. Believe there are some nice trails in the adjoining preserve that you might be interested in.

Good luck and have a great trip.
