    10 famous Appalachian Trail hikers

    I recently saw this posting at the Mother Nature Network site. Among the 10 most famous AT hikers:

    1. Earl Shaffer – First person to thru-hike the A.T. (no debate)

    2. Mike Hanson – First blind person to hike the A.T. (what about Bill Erwin?, guess he wasn’t totally blind)

    3. Grandma Gatewood – first person to hike the trail three times, and she was the oldest woman to thru-hike the trail at the time (no debate)

    4. Bill Bryson – author of a Walk In The Woods (well, he did make the A.T. more famous, but ….)

    5. Scott Rogers – the first above-the-knee amputee to hike the entire Appalachian Trail

    6. Kevin Gallagher – strung 4000 still photos together to create a stop-motion film of the A.T.

    7. Jacques d’Amboise – shared his “Trail Dance,â€
