Trip Report: Woke up again early in the morning to Baby’s whining (see previous trip report). BC, Sarah, Kim, and I spent another morning hanging out in the kitchen drinking freshly roasted gourmet coffee. Then, BC, Kim, and I headed out for a nice run on the Huckleberry Trail before returning to the Holland Ranch for a round of showers and some tasty hand crafted deli sandwiches. Going to get me some cold cuts people!

After lunch, we all set out for our hiking destination, but not before first swinging by a great little beer store in Blacksburg to pick up some crafted barley hops for later that night. Upon arrival at our destination at Mountain Lake Lodge, and prior to getting started on our hike, we first toured the grounds in the sprinkling rain.

Kim and I were excited to find out that Mountain Lake Lodge is where part of the filming of the movie Dirty Dancing took place. Other parts were apparently filmed at the Lake Lure Inn located in Lake Lure, North Carolina, for which we now have a reason to visit there too. Apparently, the stone lodge at Mountain Lake Lodge was used in the move as "Kellerman's Resort," a fictional mountain retreat in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York.

The lake itself, which typically covers an area close to 50 acres, is currently a tiny fraction of this size, supposedly due to natural geographic features located below the lake bottom, which cause the level to fluctuate dramatically. The hike, which we ended up completing in the rain, was pleasant, but due to the cloud cover, we were unable to enjoy the otherwise spectacular views. As such, we had to settle for a panoramic photo sent to us by BC and Sarah from a subsequent hike they took there on a sunnier day.

After our hike, we toured the inside of the lodge, and then partook in some Dirty Dancing shenanigans (see photos for additional information). We then wrapped up the evening with an awesome dinner at Palisades, a quaint little restaurant located in the middle of nowhere, and another night reminiscing and talking about the movie Dirty Dancing around the fire pit.
