Trip Report: | After a late night near-midnight arrival in my Dad’s dually Diesel, which I’m sure likely roused the majority of the neighborhood residents from their Thursday night’s slumber, Kim and I cashed in on a great night’s sleep in the RV, which we parked in the front yard of the Holland Ranch located in Christiansburg, Virginia. Woke up early the next morning to the sweet sound of Baby, the neighbor’s tiny little Chihuahua, whining at the camper door for some much needed attention. Baby was a little hesitant at first, but eventually warmed up to us, and after we won her over with some affectionate scratching behind the ears, we had a hard time shaking her from our heels for the remainder of our stay. Jimmy, aka BC, and Sarah, our awesome hosts for the weekend, were also awake, and we could hear them bustling around in the Holland Ranch house. BC invited us in, and proceeded to fire up the popcorn popper out on the back porch in order to roast up some gourmet coffee beans he had received through one of his specialty mail-order coffee bean vendors. The four of us spent a little time in the kitchen hanging out, drinking freshly roasted gourmet coffee, some of the best I’ve ever had I might add, and catching up on what had been new in our lives over the last six months. BC had the day off from work, but as odd as it may seem to say it, lucky for us Sarah still had to work. Lucky for us because it resulted in us getting to tag along for a great informative tour of the veterinary facilities at Virginia Tech. Saw lots of interesting stuff and learned a lot about dairy farming and both large animal breeding and feeding, including one breeding device in particular, which I won’t mention here, that I was really intrigued with. After the tour, we said our goodbyes to Sarah with plans to hook up again after our hike to experience some local flavor. Had a great hike, and really enjoyed scrambling to the top of the “Tooth,” but that was only one part of what turned out to be a truly fun-filled day. After the hike, we headed back to Christiansburg, and stopped at Due South BBQ for some takeout. Swung by the Holland Ranch to pick up Sarah, and then by a friend’s house to pick up a coworker of Sarah’s. We then proceeded on to the Parkway Brewing Company. The outdoor area was bustling with happy imbibers, and looked like a great place to spend the evening reminiscing and relaxing. However, it started to sprinkle so we headed inside with our Due South, grabbed some Factory Girl IPAs and other barley-derived libations, and settled into some comfortable seating for some tasty BBQ and beer. Spent the evening at Parkway sharing some great stories with some great friends. Afterwards, we headed back to the ranch, stoked up the fire pit, and enjoyed a few more cowboy sodas with our hosts and another neighbor. Ultimately cashed in on another great night’s sleep, only to be woken again early the next morning by Baby’s whining. Apparently, “nobody puts Baby in the corner!” |
