Trip Report: | Dropped my hiking companions from our first week in the Sierras off at the airport early in the morning, returned to the hotel to do some laundry, and then went back to the airport around 1:00 pm to pick up G-man. G’s flight was on time so we gathered up his luggage and headed to the REI to stock up on supplies for a backpacking trip we would be taking later in Sequoia National Park. We drove to the park, stopping for pizza along the way, and arrived at Dorst Creek Campground by late afternoon. We set up camp in no time, and then headed out to Moro Rock. Our plan was to head straight there, but it was impossible to not stop around every corner to get out of the car and experience the massive beauty of the giant sequoias. We initially missed our turn onto Crescent Meadow Road, but didn’t end up regretting it. Due to the missed turn, we ended up seeing two large tarantula-looking spiders along the road, and then after turning around saw a brown colored black bear crossing Generals Highway. After that, we turned onto Crescent Meadow Road and stopped to join another couple watching a yearling nibble at some foliage in the distance. From there, we got back in the car to continue on up the hill to Moro Rock. We rounded the corner, and a cub ran across the street right in front of us. Three bears all within a half hour, and all on the first day in the park. We considered ourselves pretty lucky. The hike up to Moro Rock was nice and relaxing and was a pleasant conclusion to our first day in the park. We enjoyed the sun as it set in the western sky, and then returned to our campground to call it an evening. |
