Trip Report: |
The Old South Mac trail head starts from the parking area near picnic shelter C. There are several trails that start at the same point so it is a good idea to get a copy of a map before heading out. The trail starts out level and flat and is well maintained. There is an interpretive trail that turns to the right and then the old north mac trail turns off to the left shortly after starting out. It is aproximately 1/2 a mile to the split where the Old south mac trail splits to the left and begins to climb slowly at first. Be sure to watch for the yellow trail blazes for this trail to make sure you stay on the correct trail. The first point of intrest on this part of the tral is the old ccc dynamite shack, then there are several dry streams to cross. Near the half way point to the top the trail turns back to the left in a switch back and then back to the right with another switch back. Along the way there are a couple of very beautiful views of the mountains a cave and the stream running below. Now the trail turns more rocky, with lots of roots and begins to climb a steeper grade as you make your way towards the top of the mountain. The trial ends about .3 tenths of a mile from the old tub springs campsite and .8 of a mile from the observation tower. At this point you can choose to continue to the tower, turn back and rehike the same trail to the bottom or take one of the other trails at this intersection back to the bottom of the mountain. I would personally rate this trail as moderate because it has an elevation gain of aproximately 1800 feet and lots of rocks and roots making it somewhat hard to hike and the trail is 2.4 miles one way making for a round trip of 4.8 miles. |
