Trip Report: We began our hike from hwy. 107 just below the Cherry Hill Recreation Area entrance. The marked trail head is on the right just across the road from the Winding Stairs Trail marker. From the road you decend into the Cane Creek bottom passing close to FS road 709. Once across the foot bridge on Cane Creek it is over the ridge to the headwaters of Pigpen Branch and many ravines with both wet and dry branches. For the most part the trail follows the same contour and is very easy walking. Over three miles the elevation drop is just over three hundred feet. There are several small detours due to downed trees but the trail is always well defined. Once we reached the junction with the Foothills Trail we continued South along the Chatooga to just above the Big Bend Falls. The Mountain Laurel was in full bloom so it was a nice hike. We relaxed awhile by the river and then started the return trip. Back to the car by 12:20 PM and on to Pete's in Walhalla for a well deserved Chili Cheesburger
