Trip Report: We were disappointed that the fog and clouds were so low and thick that the tops of the higher dunes were invisible. At least we had seen the dunes under a clearer sky the evening before as we drove across the valley. Also the moon was bright last night and we could see the dunes by moonlight -- looking very much like a mountain range. A fall hike means that we did not have to ford Medano Creek as it was completely dried up. The rain from the night before made the sand more compact and easier to walk on than it is when soft and dry. Nonetheless, hiking up the slopes of the dunes was difficult, so we quickly learned to chart a zig-zag course by staying as much as possible on the ridges and crest of the dunes.
