Trip Report: | I did both the Boardwalk loop and the Weston Lake Trail on my afternoon in Congaree National Park, and only wished that I could have put off my business conference another day so I could have a chance at the other trails in this beautiful wonderland. Mosquitoes were not a problem because the water was very low. The Boardwalk had given only a few glimpses of the Congaree Swamp as it normally is -- under water. The Weston Lake trail gave some fabulous views of Cedar Creek and Weston Lake. I was particularly intrigued by the still dark water -- about the color of black coffee. The baldcypress trees are a fantastic sight -- especially for somebody like me from the west. It's hard to describe just how thick the vegetation can be, from the tupelo and baldcypress trees to the loblolly pines and all those vines and the Spanish moss hanging from it all. Next time I come here, it will be with more than one afternoon, and I will hike all the trails and take the canoe trip down the river. |
