| Trip Report: | Saturday (10/27/07) – White Lightening and I left the house in Pineville just after 10am this morning to pick-up The Camel in Mooresville. He just moved to the area and has a nice pad right off I-77. We loaded his gear in the truck then drove about two hours to the trailhead just north of Morganton. Listened to some of the game v's UNC on the radio and was pleased to hear that we had a 17-3 lead at the half. We also drove through Burger King, then arrived at the trailhead around 1pm. Some bear hunters were in the parking area and were searching for four of their hound dogs which were still in the Wilson Creek Recreation Area. We heard them in the distance as we started the hike along Harper's Creek but never ran across them on the trail. After about an hour, we passed an impressive waterfall barely visible from the trail, then reached our campsite along Harper's Creek. We were lucky to get here when we did. Three separate Boy Scout and Church groups walked through with their backpackings looking for a site this evening. Did some recon for firewood, then cooked up dinner and sat around the fire until about midnight. Sunday (10/28/07) – Got up at 9am this morning to have some breakfast, pack up, and head back to the trailhead. It took us nearly 1 1/2 hours to get on the trail but we made up for it by setting a brisk pace and hiked back to the truck in 45 minutes. White Lightening and I were needed back in Charlotte by 2pm to relieve the ladies who were headed to a Cabi show. Stopped at The Camel's to drop him off at his new crib on the way, then made it to Pineville at the required time. The schedule made for a hurried pace today, but it was still nice to get out in the backcountry this weekend - especially with the leaves close to peak. |
