Trip Report: | Today the park didn't charge for admission so we went by to check it out. Usual parking is $2 for parking I believe. There was a musket and cannon demonstration with a good speech about the Fort's history. My Son really enjoyed talking with the soldiers and exploring the Fort, especially the upper deck. As we were pulling out of the parking lot we noticed a trail and decided to check it out. This was definitely worth checking out. There was a monument to John Wesley, the found of Methodism (yawn), and a battlement for artillery (really cool) and my Son and I spent a good while exploring the rooms and looking for the ghost of soldiers. As the hike continued we ended up along the Savannah River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean. The sky was clear and blue, the sun was out and kept the chilly wind at bay. There are all kinds of deer and racoon tracks which my Son proudly informed us which were which. The trees were wonderfully twisted from past storms. The rail to trail trail is very popular in Savannah as it goes beside a good river and has a lot of wildlife (birds) along it's shore. This is a great activity to do after you go and eat one at one of the overpriced tourist traps here in Savannah. My recommendations: The Crab Trap on Tybee (live alligators and Jimmy Buffett atmosphere) Spankys on Tybee Island (great burgers) North Beach Grille (Tybee Island next to the Lighthouse) Lady and Sons (downtown Savannah near City Market) buffett with great Southern food. |
