Trip Report: | I had camped near the origin of Saunders Run about 5 years ago and loved it in February, so in order to camp along Saunders again, I started the loop where the cutoff trail heads north from Wallace Mine Road and headed CCW along the loop. Hike time from there to near where the trail leaves Saunders Run and heads west took about 5 hours, and the remainder about 3 hours. Sadie (the GSP) and Lilly (the lab) were excited to get moving! From Wallace Mine to Caledonia, the trail follows an old logging road which makes for easy going. The trail is truly a trail from Caledonia to Shaggers Inn Roads. A good camping spot would be where the trail crosses Trout Run. After Shaggers Inn, you once again follow a maintenance road along a ridge to an old well head. From here until Laurel Run, there is no significant road-following. There is a steep, tricky descent down to Little Medix Run. If you were hiking CW, this ascent would be rough. We saw some anglers trying their luck in Little Medix Run as we crossed to make our ascent. This creek is not named, but VERY picturesque. Not many spots to pitch a tent here, though. After climbing the ridge, we descended again towards a feeder creek of Laurel Run. If you don't have time for the whole hike, I would recommend hiking in a quarter mile or so from Laurel Run up this feeder creek to camp. Very nice - just find a spot anywhere. We camped along Saunders Run and the dogs were exhausted. Sometime before midnight Sadie tangled with a porcupine so I spent about 45 minutes at 3 am pulling about 30 quills from her muzzle and mouth. After not whimpering a peep the whole time, she went to sleep immediately. We slept late until the sun made it to the bottom of the hollow and warmed things up. I pulled the last of the stubborn quills from Sadie's mouth, nose, and paw so she could eat and enjoy the day, then struck out. After that, you couldn't even tell she had anything happen during the night. Pretty uneventful 2nd day although hiking up Little Laurel Run was picturesque for most of its length. After the trail breaks from LLR, it's just a stroll in the woods back to the car |
