Trip Report: 6/29/95: (Sanctuary Campground) - Slawdog and I flew into Anchorage by 12:30am and met up with The Iceman who had already picked up the rental car. Got our luggage and drove all night toward Denali National Park leaving town around 1:30am. Stopped for briefly for breakfast at an all night café around 2:30am and was surprised to find out that it never is pitch black in this area during late June. The sun set at 12:30am as we flew into Anchorage tonight and came up just before 4am this morning. The sunrise was beautiful from the road and we stopped to take some pictures along Alaska Route 3. There were also great views of Denali (also knows as Mt. McKinley in the area).

Made it to the NPS Visitor’s Center and the permit office by 6:45am and got in line for a backcountry permit. Watched the video, got our permit and picked up a bear-proof container for our food. The Iceman, Slawdog and I then hit the stores for food by 10am and ate at a nearby pizza place and had some beers. We then caught a 2:30pm bus ride to the Sanctuary Campground along the Denali Park Road. Arrived around 4-5pm and all of us were pretty beat. Cooked up some dinner, made some spiced bourbon drinks and played cards with the Iceman until 9pm. Slawdog sacked out earlier this evening.

Weather: Mix of sun and clouds with temperatures to 50’s H.
