Trip Report: 7/01/1993 - I started packing by 2pm this afternoon so The Ox and I could hit the road by 4pm for the 5 1/2 hour drive to northern Michigan and the Manistee National Forest. We stopped to get some brews on the way and had a few as we drove the last hour headed for Highbank Lake where we found a random spot tucked away from the normal campsites. We drove in, pitched camp, and had a few more brews in the Eureka tent. The skeeters were vicious this evening and sitting outside was impossible. We played some cards by the candle lantern and managed to blowout two Thermarests with one match when The Ox dropped it lighting the candle lantern. The match burned down to his fingers and when he dropped it, the match somehow managed to bounce off his Thermarest and then onto mine – an impressive feat to say the least. Weather: Partly Everything - Overcast, Sun, Rain, Clouds, Temps to 70's

7/02/1993 - The Ox and I were up at 9:30am to get some fishing supplies, then we hit the North Country Trail headed for Condon Lake where we did some fishing and had some lunch. The Ox got a nice size leach on his foot while fishing in Tevas, but didn't notice it until we pitched camp at Leaf Lake. There were other backpackers camping at Condon Lake this evening and we decided to backtrack on the trail to give them some privacy. We were the only ones at Leaf Lake tonight although we did see an ATV (a guy with his daughter) just before sunset. The skeeters were vicious again this evening, and we had to get a roaring blaze going to keep them at bay so we could hang around outside of the tent. Bug repellant doesn't seem to be much of a deterrent here. We spent the rest of the night huddled around the fire, sweating profusely; but it did manage to keep the bugs away. Weather: Partly Sunny with some overcast skies in the afternoon and brief periods of rain. Clear night with a full moon. 70’s H.

7/03/1993 – We packed up camp and hiked 1-2 miles back to the car by 11am this morning and took a swim in Nichols Lake before heading back to Chicago. After a quick stop at Wendy’s, we were back in the Windy City by 3:30pm and headed out with a large mob for Mexican food, then made a visit to the Vu and to Berlin.
