Trip Report: We talked the desk clerk at the Timberline Lodge into letting us park in the hotel lot overnight which was a major plus since they have had a lot of vandalism in this area recently. (A backcountry parking lot is on the property, but it was full from day hikers.) After loading up our packs, we followed the Timberline Trail (which shares some of the route with the Pacific Crest Trail) and hiked passed ZigZag Canyon and on to Paradise Park this afternoon in the ninety degree heat. Both destinations were worth the effort, and we ended up camping just off the P.C.T. near a meadow with spectacular views of Mount Hood. After cooking up some dinner, we climbed a ridge and watched the sun set from a rock outcropping on the western slopes of Mount Hood. Mt. Helens and Mt. Jefferson were also visible in the distance (as was the Portland suburb of Gresham). There was snow lingering in the high elevations but most of it was above 6000'. If we had more time, I would have rented skis this afternoon and paid the $29 for a lift ticket, but after sitting in the meadow this evening I had no regrets. This was a great hike.
