Hike Summary: Wai’anapanapa State Park offers spectacular panoramic views of the coastline and ocean. The black lava coast complimented by deep green vegetation creates a beautiful contrast to the aqua blue ocean topped by white caps created by breaking waves.

This particular hike includes an easy loop hike around two fresh water caves, a black sand beach, a small ocean cave, and a longer trail along the coastline that includes a blowhole and countless black lava cliffs. The short loop trail to the fresh water caves leads from the black sand beach overlook area and is easy to follow.

The black sand beach actually consists of small black rounded stones that are somewhat difficult to walk on in bare feet, and the surf is pretty rough, but it’s difficult not to be beckoned into the water for some body surfing. The small ocean cave is along the right side of the beach when facing the ocean.

The trail leads along the coast in both directions, but for this hike, we took the trail to the left when facing the ocean. This section of the trail leads along a blowhole and some stunning black lava cliffs. It’s a short hike, and relatively flat, but well worth the time.
