Hike Summary: | The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Preserve is a beautiful area near Wildomar, south of Murrietta through Slaughterhouse Canyon in the Temecula Valley. The area has it all, rolling hills, chaparral, oak woodlands, beautiful rock outcroppings, prairie, meadow and streamside riparian habitats. On this hike we will complete 2 loops, the Granite-Vista Grande Waterline Loop (2.7 miles) and the Waishal Trial Loop to Cole Canyon (6 miles). On the first loop we will pass through the various ecological habitats and along a creek finding tenejas and pools in basalt-lined creekbeds that contain water throughout the summer. The second part of the hike is "demanding" with a 1,000 ft. elevation gain. We will head up hill following a ridge to the summit at 2,104 feet. Then we follow the ridge saddle to a second peak at 1,810 continuing on between Slaughterhouse & Cole Canyons. We will take the ascent at a moderate pace comfortable for everyone in the group. |
