I don’t know if this is an appropriate use of this forum. If not, please let me know.
I have been asked to plan and organize for early Spring ’09 an overnight backpacking trip for my son’s Boy Scout troop. As we have two crews heading to Philmont next summer, our total contingent is likely to approach, and may exceed, 30 trekkers.
I am considering the Jacks River Trail in the Cohutta Wilderness in northern Georgia. We would start the hike at Dally Gap and follow the trail downriver all the way to the northwestern trail head in/near the Alaculsy Valley for a total of 16+ miles. I would like to camp overnight at least 2 miles downriver from the Jacks River Falls (approximate midpoint).
The Forest Service’s restrictions on hiking and camping in the Cohutta Wilderness will require that we break up into separate groups, each no larger than 12 persons. As a result, we will need at least 3 campsites.
I would appreciate any and all recommendations for suitable campsites consistent with the foregoing requirements. I do not need GPS coordinates (that would be greedy); just general directions to and descriptions of the sites.
Thanks in advance,
Chuck
