Hike Summary: We’ll peak Mt. Baden-Powell without doing the grueling 33 switchbacks that climb from the Vincent Gap trail-head. We will meet at the Vincent Gap parking lot and carpool down the road a few miles to the Dawson Saddle trail-head. Parking is limited at the Dawson site so I suggest carpooling.

This is a beautiful hike through pine and fir trees and much of the mountain is still green with prolific wildflowers to view. Halfway up the trail there is a forest of Lodge Pole pines and if you keep an eye out, you could spot a few 2,000 years old Limber pines which are relatively rare in these mountains. Pine needles come in bundles of two; while limber have bundles of five. Limber pines were discovered in 1962 by an Angeles National Forest Supervisor.

At the summit, we’ll stop for a break and great views overlooking the Mojave Desert and San Gabriel Peaks. This is not an extreme hike with a well maintained trail. However, it is not an easy trip due to the steep elevation climb in 5 miles. You may experience some shortness of breath if you are not used to high altitudes. The trail will push your lungs and legs.

This is a 10 mile elevation hike with a gain of approximately 2,500’. We will keep an intermediate pace with a slow warm-up. The trail-head is at an elevation of 7,200’ and our peak will be at 9,600’. Plan on 5-6 hours on the trail.
