Hike Summary: Upper Lehman Creek is at 7750’ elevation and this trail will climb 2100’ over its 3.4 mile length. Acclimation to the altitude before embarking on this trail is highly recommended. If the trail is done in the summer, water may be in very short supply, and the summer heat can be very oppressive – take precautions.

From Upper Lehman Creek trailhead, the trail starts upward immediately, beginning in an open rocky area with small pines and a lot of sagebrush and other desert plants. For the first 1.5 miles it stays close to Lehman Creek. After that the trail begins to climb the canyon slope away from the creek and through the trees.

The last mile is the steepest and where the trail begins to switchback up the slopes of Wheeler Peak. In this area the forest begins to thin as it approaches the tree line. The trail ends at the Wheeler Peak Scenic Overlook on a car road.

Those with a little more time should take the easier walk from the scenic overlook 1.4 miles farther through the Bristlecone Pine Grove (this trail gains 600’ in elevation). For the more adventurous, another 1.8 miles (and 1100’ higher) beyond the Bristlecone Pine Grove is the glacier on Wheeler Peak. This is the last remaining glacier in the entire Great Basin.

Return by the same route, all downhill, to the trailhead.
