I am planning on introducing my son (age 11) to the AT by backpacking from Max Patch to Walnut Mountain Shelter (WMS) and back. I have never been on this part of the AT. Our plan is to overnight camp at Max Patch and then hike to WMS - with a lunch stop at Roaring Forks. Overnight camp at WMS and then return to Max Patch the next day. The topos of this route look favorable for someone that is age 11. Has anyone taken their son/daugher on this part of the AT?? How is camping at Max Patch and WMS?? Is the trial easy to follow?? Is parking safe and adequate at Max Patch? Thanks!
