Hike Summary: The Hike begins through an ancient fern and 'ohi'a forest on a well maintained trail. The first mile follows the rim of the crater and eventually gradually descends out of the lush forest into the barren lava crater. The crater itself reminded me of broken pavement that would have buckled during an earthquake. The walk across the crater went by several steam vents. Once across the crater, the trail proceeds to ascend the crater wall for 450 feet. Shortly after reaching the top and the 'ohi'a forest the trail empties into the parking lot. I highly recommend this hike if you only have one hike to complete during your visit to the park.
