Hiking The Cyclades - Santorini
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Scott_Amundson]Scott Amundson

Santorini is located in the south Aegean Sea. This puts it 125 miles southeast of the Greece. It is actually the southernmost Cycladic island. Sixty-three more nautical miles south of Santorini sits Crete. Ferries continually travel back and forth between all of the islands in the Aegean Sea. The incredible geographical features of Santorini come from its long history of massive volcanic eruptions. Many believe that Santorini is what is left of the lost city of Atlantis.

Actually, the island of Santorini is technically a grouping of a batch of volcanic islands that surround one large caldera that probably formed a few hundred thousand years ago. One of the large Santorini volcano eruptions must have collapsed the interior part of the land that then filled up with water. From evidence that has been studied, experts believe that human inhabitation on the island dates all the way back to the third millennium B. C., and that ancient cultures, including the Minoans, lived on the island. But when the Santorini volcano erupted again, around the year 1500 B. C., the island was completely buried under many layers of soot and volcanic ash. That eruption was one of the most significant volcanic eruptions of the past two thousand years and contributed to forming that large caldera. The two "youngest" islands are in the center of the Santorini island caldera and named Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni. Palea Kameni is two thousand years old, while Nea Kameni began to emerge only four-hundred and twenty-five years ago. Fifty years ago, the Santorini volcano experienced its last set of major lava flows on Nea Kameni. Boat tours from Thira Port to "the Volcano" are offered in glass-bottom boats.

Santorini is full of things to do. For hiking, there aren't many ancient monop?tia on Santor?ni. The longest trail starts at Fira and offers fantastic views on the caldera. Hiking the old trail from the summit of the Prof?tis Il?as to Per?ssa is a must. Making this hike, it's best to leave from P?rgos or Embori?. Road Edition publishes a great map of Santorini's hiking trails.
