I am thru-hiking the AT this year and was curious which book is better - which would you buy/carry if you only bought one of them.

Both are good. Personally, I like Wingfoot's book better ... but either one will work. Wingfoot also has a website with some useful information at www.trailplace.org. Whiteblaze.net is also an excellent source of info before you hit the trail. Hope this helps.

Rumor is that Wingnut hasn't been on the trail much in the last few years. You might do better with the Companion.

Bonus to Wingfoot - he includes all the trail mileage which basically makes the AT Data Book unnecessary. Call it a one stop shop.

I thought Wingfoot sold the rights to his book, true?

Yeah, Wingfoot has moved on and there is a new author of the Thru-Hiker's Handbook:

The new author is Bob '501' McCaw.
