Hike Summary: This short hike descends into the New River Gorge on a wooden boardwalk. The boardwalk has two observation decks that offer unobstructed views of the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest steel arch span in the western hemisphere, as well as the mile wide gorge it spans. A ramp leads to the upper overlook, then 178 steps descend to the lower overlook.

The completion of the New River Gorge Bridge on October 22, 1977, reduced a 40-minute drive down narrow mountain roads and across one of America's oldest rivers to less than one minute. Now, a one hundred year-old road of hairpin turns winds down to the bottom of the New River Gorge, across a smaller lower bridge, and up the other side. The lower bridge offers nice views up and down the river gorge, as well as good views of the New River Gorge Bridge.
